Santa Comba Dao is located northeast of the city of Coimbra and southwest of the cities of Viseu and Tondela on the right bank of the river Dão, near its confluence with the river Mondego, the town of Santa Comba Dao's county town and recorded a population of about 2100 residents in 1991.  

The most important built heritage includes the pillory, the parish church (with elements of Baroque), the Romanesque bridge over the River Gardens, the house of the Arches (sixteenth century), the pillory and the parish church (eighteenth) of Óvoa. The river is Dão the most significant element of natural heritage. 

 

This city of Coimbra holds a special place in the hearts of all the Portuguese. Rich in its history and said to be the oldest seat of learning in Portugal with a University founded on the 13th of August in 1290 by King Dinis. This makes it one of the oldest in the world and is known as the 'Oxford' of Portugal. Six of Portugal's Kings were born here and in 1139 until 1256 it was the chosen capital of the country. it is now a large archaeological site of great interest with a museum to display the findings from the diggings. At first sight the town appears more devoted to commerce than learning but the skyline above the lower part of the city suggest its real purpose.
